On the morning of our final basketball practice, I woke up with a fever. I wanted to go because we had a match on Saturday. I put on my uniform, then sat down again. Even walking to the kitchen felt tiring.
I told my father and messaged our coach. She replied, “Thank you for telling me. Rest today, and let us know how you feel later.” I also sent my teammates the notes I had made for our plays.
Missing practice did not mean I had stopped caring about the team. I was disappointed, but pretending to be well would not help anyone. My job that day was to explain clearly, rest, and follow the advice of the adults looking after me.
