Our science class made a “warm map” of the street between school and the station. At three points, we placed a thermometer in the shade and waited for its reading to settle. We also used a safe surface thermometer, with our teacher, to compare sunlit pavement and a bench beneath a tree.

The pavement was warmer at that moment, but our results did not tell us the temperature of the whole town. Time, cloud cover, and the material under the sensor could all affect a reading. We marked these conditions beside our numbers.

The most useful part of the map was a route. A short walk past several trees felt easier than the direct route across an open square. We asked the student council to consider this when making a summer walking guide.

A single number did not tell the entire story. The pattern of shade, surfaces, and where people actually walked helped us turn measurements into a question about daily life.

reading
settle
surface
pavement
at that moment
affect
condition
direct route

pattern
