I began my internship at a design studio expecting to watch people draw. The first morning, a designer spent two hours asking a client what problem the new sign needed to solve. I thought the drawing had not started. She said the questions were part of the design.
Later I helped organize photographs of possible locations. Some were too dark; others missed the view of people approaching from the station. The designer tested a draft with visitors and changed it after they took the wrong turn. Her first sketch had been attractive, but attractiveness alone had not made it useful.
At school I described two lessons. I admired the visible skill of drawing, and I also noticed the less visible work of listening, measuring, and revising. The studio did not ask me to choose a career from one short visit. It gave me better questions about how the work was done.
A job title had first looked like a finished picture. Watching the process showed the many decisions beneath it.

之后我帮忙整理候选地点的照片。有些太暗，有些没有拍到从车站走来的人会看到的角度。设计师让访客试用草案；他们走错路后，她便修改了。最初的草图很好看，可好看本身不足以让它有用。
回校后，我谈了两点收获：我欣赏可见的绘图技巧，也看见倾听、测量和修改这些不显眼的工作。工作室没有要我凭一次短暂参观选定职业，却让我更会问工作是怎样完成的。
一个职位名称起初像一幅完成的画。看过过程，我才发现画面底下还有许多决定。
