Lesson 5 · The Quiet Route Home

The shortest route from school to the station ran beside a busy road. My friend preferred a quieter street with fewer cars, although it added ten minutes. I assumed the quieter route must be safer and suggested that our whole group use it after evening practice.

Then another student pointed out that part of the street had poor lighting and almost no shops open at night. We walked both routes with a teacher at different times and compared crossings, lights, traffic, and places where someone could ask for help. No single route was best under every condition.

For our club guide, we listed options rather than issuing one command. We marked the main road's wider crossings and the side street's darker section, and we included the station office as a place to seek assistance. We asked students to follow current school guidance and contact an adult when worried.

My first suggestion had come from care, but it treated my friend's preference as a universal rule. The more useful guide described what changed with the time of day and the person walking.
