Our route map marked the station as a twelve-minute walk from school. On a summer afternoon, that number felt incomplete. The shortest route crossed an open square; a slightly longer path followed trees and passed a public building where people could rest.
We measured surface temperatures with a teacher and recorded shade at several times. We did not treat the readings as a direct measure of anyone's health. Still, the differences helped us ask where students waited and which parts of the journey felt hardest. A classmate pointed out that the shaded route had a narrow crossing that some people found difficult.
Our guide offered both routes, with notes on shade, crossings, and places to pause. We sent the town a request to examine shelter near the square, including the needs of people who could not simply choose the longer path.
A map's distance is useful. It is not the whole experience of a journey. The heat made us read the space between the school and station more carefully.
