Three websites said that reading for ten minutes before bed guaranteed better exam scores. Each linked to another article, and the chain eventually led to a small study about reading habits. The study had not measured exam scores. It had asked participants how they felt about sleep after several evenings.

Our class traced the claim backward and wrote down each change. “May help some people relax” became “improves sleep,” then “raises grades,” and finally “guarantees success.” Every step sounded plausible when read alone. Together, they showed how a cautious result could turn into a promise.

We presented the chain without mocking anyone who had shared the advice. Reading before bed might be pleasant or useful for a particular person. The original study simply could not support the claim about exam scores.

The most valuable word we found was not a technical term. It was “measured.” Once we asked what the researchers had actually measured, the distance between evidence and headline became visible.
