During an online exchange, I asked a student in another country, “How old is your mother?” I wanted to compare our family routines, but the conversation stopped for a moment. Later our teacher explained that asking an adult's age without a clear reason might feel too personal in some settings.
I apologized and told my partner what I had meant to ask: who usually prepared breakfast at home. She laughed and answered, then asked about my mornings. We discovered that both of us sometimes ate alone because our families' schedules differed.
The problem was not that one language had a good rule and another had a bad one. I had chosen a question that did not serve my purpose and had not considered the distance between us. Next time I began with a wider question, leaving my partner room to share what she wanted.
