A low corner of our schoolyard became muddy after every strong rain. The gardening club proposed a shallow planted area where some runoff could collect and soak into the ground. We called it a rain garden, but we knew the name alone did not guarantee a result.
With the school's permission, we studied the slope and chose plants that could survive both wet and dry periods. We measured puddles before and after the garden was built, noting the amount of rain each time. Some small storms left less standing water nearby. A much larger storm still flooded the corner.
Our report included both observations. The garden offered a place for water to slow down and gave insects and students a new patch of plants. It did not replace drains or a wider plan for heavy rain.
The best part of the project was not a claim that we had solved flooding. It was learning how to describe a useful change without pretending it could do everything.
