For a photo essay about our town library, I took a striking picture of an almost empty shelf. It looked like a symbol of a place losing its books. I was ready to put it on the first page.
Then the librarian explained that the shelf had been cleared for one morning while damaged books were checked. By afternoon, most of the books were back. My picture showed a real moment, but without that context it would suggest a story that was not true.
I could have kept the picture with a clear caption. Instead, I chose a quieter photograph of students returning books and volunteers repairing covers. It represented the activity I had actually observed over several visits.
The empty shelf was the most dramatic image I had. Leaving it out was not hiding a problem. It was deciding that an image should support the story I could explain, not a story viewers might invent from one second.
