The student council planned to vote on a new after-school event. The meeting was set for four o'clock, when many council members were free. Then Aya pointed out that students with long commutes and club practice could not attend at that time.
We did not cancel the vote. We first shared a short description of the three ideas and invited questions in person and online. We also held one brief discussion before the first lesson. Students raised issues we had missed: the cost of traveling home later, and whether a quiet room would be available during the event.
At the vote, the council chose one idea and adjusted its time. Not everyone preferred the result, but more people understood the choices and had a chance to respond.
I had thought fairness meant counting every vote correctly. Counting matters. Fairness also depends on who can enter the discussion before the choices are fixed.
