Lesson 9 · Explaining It to Someone Else

I thought I understood map scale until my younger brother asked me how far the park was from our house. On the map, the two places were four centimeters apart. I said, “The scale is one to twenty-five thousand,” and he looked even more confused.

So I tried a different explanation. “One centimeter on this map stands for twenty-five thousand centimeters in the real world. That is two hundred fifty meters. Four centimeters means about one kilometer.” He checked the path with his finger and asked why we could not simply walk in a straight line.

That question made me notice something I had ignored: the river between us and the park. The distance on the map was shorter than the actual walking route. We traced the bridge and found that the walk would be longer.

Teaching him did not prove I knew everything. It showed me exactly where my explanation was incomplete. The number on the map mattered, but so did the shape of the place.
