Our class made English subtitles for a short film about a family dinner. In one scene, the grandmother joked that the table had become a “small train station” because relatives kept arriving late. The literal subtitle sounded strange to our partner school, whose viewers thought she was complaining about noise.
We asked what made the original line funny. The grandmother was pleased that people kept coming, even while pretending to be annoyed. We tried a shorter English line that kept the playful complaint and added a small visual pause before the next arrival. We showed both versions to viewers and asked what they understood.
Neither subtitle carried every association of the Japanese phrase. The revised one helped viewers see the warmth between the characters. We kept a note about the original joke in our production record rather than filling the screen with explanation.
Translation did not mean finding a secret word that matched perfectly. It meant deciding which relationship the scene needed the viewer to notice at that moment.

两种字幕都无法承载日语原句的全部联想。修改后的版本更能让观众看见人物之间的温情。我们在制作记录里说明原来的笑话，没有用解释挤满屏幕。
翻译不是找一个完美对应的神奇词语，而是决定此刻需要让观众注意到场景里的哪种关系。
